Today, I share practical tips that focus on balancing style with storage, understanding the impact of colour, and ultimately encouraging kids to embrace this magical space.

Find the Balance Between Style and Storage
Finding the right blend of style and storage in modern library design can be challenging but necessary. You want the library to be visually appealing and functional, enticing children to explore. Start by selecting stylish shelving units that not only fit the overall theme but also offer sufficient storage for a variety of books and materials.
Open shelving is a must; making the books easily accessible, easily browsed and easily displayed to promote the books. Mix different styles of shelving, low height, mid height and tall shelving and provide variety and can make the library feel dynamic. I love placeing shelving on angles to create shape within the library, trying to avoid the 'bookshop' feel of straight shelving on every wall.
Choosing versatile furniture—like movable carts and multi-purpose tables—will help you maintain flexibility. For example, these can be rearranged for storytelling sessions, group projects, or quiet study times while complementing the overall aesthetic.
Creating Comfortable Reading Nooks
Reading nooks are a delightful addition to any primary school library. These cosy corners not only provide a comfortable reading space but also foster an inviting atmosphere where children can unwind and get lost in a book.
In my experience, the key to an effective reading nook lies in comfort and accessibility. Use soft seating options like bean bags, cushioned benches, or colorful floor cushions. Surround these nooks with fun elements like fairy lights, wall murals, or themed decorations to enhance the playful vibe. It’s about making this area a sanctuary for exploration while emphasising the importance of reading.

One of the best ways to attract children into your library is through eye-catching book displays. Traditional spine-out displays may provide the most effective solution for storage but the books can fade into the background, leaving enticing stories unnoticed. Incorporate front-facing book displays to highlight covers and draw attention.
